Van Camping

Why van camping? It certainly doesn't give you the luxury of life in an RV, but then you don't have the discomfort of sleeping in a tent, either. It's cheap compared to an RV, and you can go places they cannot. That's why we spent more than 25 nights sleeping in our conversion van last year.

Van Camping 101

You need a system of organization to keep your space inside the van livable. We noticed after our first long trip that we had brought many things we never used. We learned to be more efficient after that. We also learned how to keep the space open, by using plastic storage tubs. Not only do they stack well, but if you need more room at night, you can put them on the roof, because they're rainproof with the lids snapped on.

You have to make your van into something that's useable for you, especially if it's going to be your residence for days or weeks at a time. This meant, for my wife and I, having space to move around. Removing the two middle seats gave us enough space for dressing or cooking. A bench-seat in back folds out into a comfortable bed, so we were all set for van camping.

Van camping can be cold, as it was for us in the deserts of Arizona last winter. We ran the van and cranked up the heater once in a while, but only for brief periods. Carbon monoxide poisoning is just too possible, so don't leave the car running while you are sleeping.

Cooking a meal heats up the van, and our propane camp stove burned very clean. When it was cold, it was time to cook dinner, breakfast, or coffee. Cooking inside heats up a van, but again, because of carbon monoxide, don't sleep with a burner going. Sometimes, though, a quick warm-up is all you need before you crawl under the blankets for the night.

What's the secret to heating a conversion van when camping? Giving up was our solution. Just enjoy meal time warm-ups, but unless you have electric power, I don't know of a safe way to heat a van all night. Heat yourselves instead. Use warm clothing, and bring more blankets than you think you'll need. Fill a thermos bottle full of hot coffee each night, so it will be waiting in the morning. You warm the van making it, and warm up yourselves drinking it for breakfast.

Van Camping Advantages

Van camping obviously is cheaper than RV camping. Initial cost is a lot less if you buy used, as we did. The cost of driving a van is substantialy less - we averaged 18 miles per gallon on our last cross-country trip. An average recreational vehicle is lucky to get half of that, and will be very expensive to maintain.

A van is much more comfortable than tent camping. Also, if you do backpack, you'll likely drive some kind of car to wherever you go. Use a van, and you can come inside if it starts to rain. When backpacking a long way from home, you can save on motels on the drive to and from the trailhead.

One great thing about vans is that you can park anywhere. We've napped in parking lots, and nobody was the wiser, thanks to the inconspicuousness of a van. We got the best spot at a free campground in Florida, on a bank overlooking Lake Talquin, because our van was small enough to fit there, unlike the RVs.

You can drive anywhere. With our conversion van, camping wherever we were when it got dark was no problem. We also went down desert trails that no RV could handle. That flexibility and freedom is what we liked most about van camping.

The Secret To Slim Thighs

What's the secret to getting slim thighs? First, let me tell what it is not. You will never get the legs you want just by using those traditional leg machines at your gym or by doing day after day of boring cardio.

The reality is that you always see people at the gym doing this stuff and never seeing the results they want.

The real secret to getting your thighs slim involves 3 components: 1) proper nutrition, 2) strength training and 3) cardio (but not the typical kind of cardio everyone does).

1. Proper Nutrition: I am going to be honest with you. You will never ever get slimmer thighs if you don't put the right foods in your body. It doesn't matter how great your workout routine is or what you may have heard or read. If you eat the wrong foods your body will maintain or store more body fat around your midsection, your arms, your butt and your thighs.

And fat is what blurs the visibility of the underlying muscles. When you have excess body fat you cannot see any muscular definition.

So, if you want to get your thighs slimmer you have to eat enough of the right kinds of nutritious, fat burning foods that will help keep your legs sexy and lean.

A great rule of thumb I tell my clients is to make sure you eat at least 5 small meals each day. But, all 5 are not really "meals".

3 are meals and 2 are snacks. So, it looks like this:

Breakfast
Snack
Lunch
Snack
Dinner

Getting into the habit of eating more frequently is how you start to boost your metabolism to burn fat so you can begin to get slim thighs much faster than if you eat fewer meals.

2. Strength Training: Usually when I tell women they need strength training to make their thighs slimmer they look at me like they've just seen a ghost.

"But, I don't want to get bulky muscles" is a typical response I get. I don't know where this myth came from but I want to clarify something here.

Getting "bulky" muscles just from strength training is 100% pure myth. Here's why. Building the kind of muscle mass that you see on a bodybuilder is absolutely unrealistic for the majority of people especially women.

Women naturally have lower levels of testosterone which makes it more difficult to build muscle mass versus men.

Here is something else to consider. If you want slim thighs with nice "tone" you have to possess a certain level of muscularity anyway.

You can burn all the body fat you want but if you don't have any real muscle on your legs your slim thighs will look more like toothpicks instead of sexy legs with curves.

That doesn't mean you will "bulk up". You simply fit the level of muscularity to match your goal. Adding some lean muscle to your thighs will give you that sexy curvacious appeal you are looking for.

And that comes from intense strength training and not from doing the leg machines at the gym with light weights and lots of repetitions.

You will never get slimmer thighs with nice definition that way. You have to lift heavier and smarter with just the right amount of rest in between to allow your body to recuperate which is when your thighs slim down.

Try these thigh slimming exercises to get you started:

squats
forward lunge walks
sideways lunge walks
box or bench jumps

3. Cardiovascular Training I never said no cardio. I said not the traditional cardio everyone else does. I am going to suggest a different twist on your typical cardio routine that will burn more calories and fat while stimulating your thighs to add some lean, sexy muscle tone.

Getting your thighs slim requires the combination of sufficient muscularity and low body fat.

Your muscles lie underneath a layer of fat cells. Fat cells store body fat. The more fat you carry the bigger your fat cells become and the less visible your muscles are.

So, to see those slim thighs underneath you also need to burn the fat from your fat cells.

Here's a tip to get you started:

Perform 90% Heart Rate Peaks- Instead of doing the typical marathon cardio workout in your "fat burning zone" you are going to perform a much higher intensity workout but for a shorter time period.

This will allow you to burn more calories and fat long after your workout is over. Here is what you do:

Use the formula 220 - your age to get a number. Now, multiply that number by .85 and write down the product. Next, multiply the number by .75 and write down that product. The 2 products are your low and high end heart rate ranges.

Example for a 35-year old: 220 - 35 = 185
185 X .85 = 157
185 X .75 = 138

Heart rate range would be 138 (low end) to 157 (high end).

You will perform your cardio workout on any piece of equipment of your choice. Warm up for 5 minutes by gradually building your heart rate up to your low end range (138 in the above example).

Then you will increase the intensity until your heart rate peaks at your high end range (157 beats per minute in the above example).

Once you reach your high end range you immediately drop the intensity and recover back down to yoru low end range. Once you reach your low end range peak back up again.

Repeat this process of peaking and recovering for 30 minutes. Then record the total number of times you peaked to your high end range.

The next time you perform this you will try to beat the total number of peaks.

Cool down for 5 minutes by gradually decreasing the intensity until your heart rate is at your low end range or lower.

Stretch for 5-10 minutes.

And there you have it. The real secret to getting slim thighs is by adding some lean fat burning, thigh slimming muscle and dropping your body fat levels low enough to see those sexy trim legs.

To Timeshare or Not

I am sure that you have been approached in the last year by someone trying to get you to purchase a timeshare ownership. this may have been a simple sales call promising a free weekend stay if you agreed to attend a 90 min. presentation during the three day weekend. It may have been more forward as you received an e-mail or phone-call attempting to sell you a week at some resort. So what should you do, listen to the marketing or listen to that little person inside you telling you it can't be that great of a deal.

To make this decision it is important for you to analyze the type of travel you enjoy and undertake with your family. Do you as a family:

Take Vacations every year at approx. the same time of year.

Go to the same vacation spot year after year.

Enjoy staying at extended stay Hotel style accomodations.

Then the traditional timeshare is the perfect fit for you and your family. Proceed to any of the online sites and research the best value for a timeshare that you can find. Low price with Low flexibility is the perfect fit. Now what if I always enjoy:

Different vacation spots every year.

Taking my vacations at different times of year.

Staying in quaint houses and Bed and Breakfast spots.

Then the timeshare ownership is not for you. Now what happens if I fall somewhere between the two lists:

I occassionally like to change up my vacation destination, but not every year

I generally like to take one summer vacation a year and maybe a winter vacation.

I prefer deluxe accomodations and also occassionally enjoy a little more intimate setting.

Then you will either need to continue on your current course of action or be prepared to pay for one of the premium timeshares. Companies offering the Premium Services are Marriott, Hilton, and Disney. These companies offer flexibility with an extended network of timeshares and trade partners. You get premium trade value with any of their accounts.

What is this trade value. Simply put, timeshare owners are teamed together and allowed to deposit vacation weeks in a bank for later use. The owners at a later time can request different resorts and different weeks from their originally scheduled week. So why was it said that certain resorts get premium trade value, do they not rate everybody the same?

The answer to that question is no, in the area of timeshares not everyone is the same. If you own a Marriott, Hilton, or Disney week you get first options on any weeks in those chains. What does this mean, if you are a non-owner and are awaiting a week to come up at a Marriott for example and are next on the list for that resort. Naturally when the week comes open you should get it – first come first serve. Not so fast, a Marriott owner comes in and says that they want the same week as you. The Marriott owner gets the nod even though you have been on the list longer. Does not seem fair but it is the way of the timeshare companies.

So what does this cost. The premium companies are going to cost you from 3x to 4x of the non-premium companies. For this added cost you gain flexibility and priority in trades. If moving is not important go with the cheaper vendors. If flexibility is needed go with one of the premium companies.

Plan Ahead For A Fun Filled Family Camping Experience

Plan Ahead for a Fun-filled Family Camping Experience

Camping means different things to different people. For some, it is going out with a camper and practically all of the comforts of home. For others, it is backpacking into the mountains and sleeping in the open elements with nothing over your head but the stars. It could even mean foraging for your food (hopefully you'll come across a good trout stream!). My definition of camping falls on the more comfortable side of the two, loving the camping experience, but needing to have some basic comforts also. This article will give you a few tips that you can use no matter what kind of camping you enjoy!

Starting With A Plan

A great camping trip starts with a great plan! Planning out your camping trip will help you be prepared and build excitement way before time to head to the hills (or the beach!). Make sure that you include the whole family and let everyone have a part in deciding what you'll need to bring to make this a great adventure and a pleasurable experience. Camping with your family is a great way to build a closer relationship between parents and kids. Good quality time spent without the distraction of the TV, computer and video games can make for some great memories and shared experiences that will be remembered for years to come. You'll experience quality time for everyone involved.

Deciding Where To Camp

One of the first things you will want to decide is where you are going to camp. Do you prefer "roughing it"? This means no electrical hookups, no camp host or camp store, and bathroom facilities means "the woods"! For most campers, I would recommend an established campground. State Parks provide some of the best campgrounds available and they are usually very well maintained and reasonably priced. You will have the security of knowing that they have done their best to keep the area maintained and as safe as possible. In choosing the campground, you will also want to look into what kind of activities, if any, they offer or are offered in the nearby vicinity. I would recommend you pick up a good campground directory such as Woodalls campground guide and directory to help you decide where to camp.

Selecting Your Gear

Once you've found the perfect location, you will then want to begin to plan what to take with you. Will you be camping in a tent, "pop-up" type trailer or possibly an RV? Shop around; see what is offered and what will work the best for you and your family. Be sure you include everyone in this decision. It makes for some great excitement and will have everyone looking forward to the first time you try out that new tent or camper. Also, if everyone has a part in this decision it limits the number of complaints that you may hear about later on! Do you plan on using a sleeping bag? Remember that an adult size sleeping bag, does not necessarily mean one size fits all! If you will be tent camping, another thing to consider is having a mattresses or foam padding under the sleeping bags. Foam padding usually folds up to a compact size and is much easier on the back than sleeping right on the floor of the tent. It just might be worth the extra trouble to pack it along to insure a good nights sleep! I would also recommend a large battery operated lamp for your tent. Another great idea is for everyone to have their own flashlight, in case any get separated from other members of the family during trips to and from the bathroom facilities (or woods!).

Use A Camping Checklist

A camping check list makes every trip much more enjoyable in several ways. First, the whole family gets involved together in creating your camping check list. Making out your check list long before the trip is kind of like starting your vacation early. It builds up the excitement and anticipation when everyone begins to think of items they want and need to bring. Second, check lists help you organize and pack your camping gear. The check list reminds you what to bring, and where to pack it. Third, check lists help you remember to take everything with you. No one likes to get to camp and find out they forgot some important item (even though you will probably will forget something!). Fourth, check lists help you remember what NOT to bring next time. This is important, because each trip is a little different, so make notes on your check list about what camping gear you used, what you didn't and what you wish you had taken. This lets you plan to make your next camping trip even better.

Planning Out Your Meals

Food is another important factor. You need to consider what you will be taking for food and what you will need in way of storage for it, such as an ice chest, etc. Most camping areas have a cooking area. Do you want to bring your own grill or use the outside cookers which may mean waiting your turn? Don't forget to take the can opener if the food that you are taking with you will require one. Don't forget cooking and eating utensils. Remember, you don't have to wash paper plates and plastic cups! If you decide to use these type items be sure you dispose of them properly and don't leave your trash for someone else to pick up! Meals that can be cooked at home ahead of time, and travel well in a cooler, will save a lot of time especially on the first night of your trip. Precooked meats will last longer in the cooler than raw meats, especially if you use block ice in your cooler. It will last much longer than cubes. If you're an ice cream lover, nothing is better than home made ice cream on a camping trip. Depending on where you'll be camping, you can bring along your electric ice cream maker or your "old fashioned" hand crank ice cream churn. Of course you'll want to make sure you have access to a local store that has ice! If you're in an area inhabited by bears, special precautions must be taken with both your food and garbage. if you're in an established campground, place your food in the special bear-proof receptacles at night. If you leave food in your vehicle, a hungry bear will find a way to get inside it, and he doesn't care what kind of damage he does to your vehicle! It's always a good idea to talk with the local Park Ranger about wildlife in your campground area.

What About Your Drinking Water?

The water around organized campgrounds is probably safe. Their water is usually privately treated or it is supplied by a near by city treatment plant. The water from lakes, springs, rivers and streams however, is untreated and can carry a lot of bacteria, viruses, and other things that can cause illness. Water that runs rapidly over gravel, rocks, and plant life appears clean and limpid, but this is no guarantee it is safe for you. Your best bet to ensure you and your family's safety is to always treat any water obtained from unfamiliar sources, such as all the sources mentioned above. It is not that hard to do and it takes so little time. There are many different ways to treat water, but boiling water is probably the most common method used. It is best to boil it for more than 10 minutes at a steady boil. If you are camping in a wilderness type area where treated water is not available, then be sure to bring your own. Don't forget to add that to your checklist!

Clothing Considerations

Bring extra clothing along. If the weather is different than you had planned on, then you'll be glad you did. Don't forget a first aid kit for any unfortunate minor injuries. Bring activities that can be enjoyed inside the tent as well as those for outside, such as books, games, etc., in case inclement weather makes you want to be inside. Plan for everything that could go wrong, and then be grateful and glad when all goes well. And finally, one last important item.....a camera to capture those memories!

Make it a family adventure that all will enjoy and possibly want to repeat another time. Above all, have a fun-filled family camping experience!

RV Gas Mileage - How Not To Drink The Fuel!

When going on a camping trip, the best vehicle to take on the trip would be a RV. An RV is the acronym for Recreation auto and is essentially a tow-able or motorized auto that is used for both transport and as a temporary living quarters. They are typically sold by recreational car dealers. There are many RV lease vehicles for one time use of the RV found in local RV dealers. It's also possible to a rent RV online if you require one.

Of course, you can't expect too good a mileage as RV gas mileage is rather low in comparison to other cars. The reason is because of it being a massive and heavy vehicle. [**] there are some tricks you might do to increase the RV gas mileage.
you might check the tire pressure of the tires of the RV using a RV pressure regulator as tires with too low tire pressure give a low mileage. Limiting the utilization of the air conditioner in the RV will also help increasing the RV gas mileage. If your RV has additional RV trailer accessories, it is likely that the RV gas mileage will be low due to the additional weight. When traveling, avoid climbing and braking pointlessly and this can increase the RV gas mileage. Naturally, the better the route is, the better your mileage will be, So when plotting out your camping trip, route it using the most productive routes possible .
You can raise the mileage considerably by making a visit to the garage before going on a camping trip. Any fouled fuel injectors in the RV, when replaced will increase the the miles for your money. With the realization of all of these steps, you will find that the RV gas mileage will increase considerably, to give you a better mileage on your camping trip.

How to Properly Dispose of a Portable Hard Drive

When people try to get rid of an old portable hard drive, they often think that there is only one way or specific location of proper disposal. While there are some important things to do when preparing to get rid of your hard drive, you do not necessarily have to dispose of it in a specific way. In other words, you do have options. There are few different things you can ultimately do with your small portable hard drive when you realize it no longer has any use to you.

Make Sure to "Wipe Clean" Your Portable Hard Drive

No matter what you decide to do with your portable hard drive, make sure you get it wiped clean. While getting any hard drive wiped clean will cost you, as you either have to take it to someone who can do it or purchase software to do the task, it is well worth the cost. Everyone has private files on their hard drives that could possibly be retrieved in the future without your knowledge. By getting it wiped, you can be sure that none of your personal information stays on the hard drive. This is especially a good decision if you are selling or giving away your hard drive, but even when throwing it away, doing so is a good call.

Give it to Someone

Your old compact portable hard drive is not necessarily bad weight just because you have decided to upgrade to a newer one. If you do not feel like selling it, but feel that it is too good to throw away, you can simply give it to someone. Anyone can use a portable hard drive, and giving it to a friend or family member is a very nice gesture.

Sell Your Portable Hard Drive on the Internet

There are people who are curious to see if they can get some money for the portable hard drive that they originally laid out cash for, and the Internet is an easy and amazing way to do so. Online auction sites give you the opportunity to open your product up to the entire web and this strategy can help you to get a decent dollar for that small portable hard drive. Another great tool is Craigslist. Since Craigslist has sections for dozens of cities across the country you are bound to find a buyer on a budget that would love to find a good deal.

Throw it Away

Once you have wiped it clean, you can actually simply take it and throw it away. Considering environmental concerns, this is probably not the best way to approach disposal, however. The best thing to do is contact your local city or town office and inquire about computer hardware disposal programs they can suggest.

Do not forget that your first step is making sure that you get your portable hard drive wiped clean before you get rid of it. After you have made sure that all of your personal information is wiped clean, you can be sure to figure out the best way to get rid of it. Sometimes you can sell it. Other times you can give it to someone. You can even have it recycled.

Planning A Camping Trip For Maximum Enjoyment

So you and the family or you and your friends have decided to go on a camping trip. It's Thursday night and you are going to leave right after work Friday evening. Now you go to the garage or basement and pull out the camping gear from last summer and toss it in the trunk. The tent, the stove and the cooler.(we'll buy some franks and beans on the way).

It's late Friday night when you reach your camp ground and you start to pitch your tent when you suddenly remember that you don't have all the tent pegs and the zipper broke the last time you used the tent. Your buddy said he'd bring the gas for the stove and lantern but forgot and the flashlights didn't work and you did not bring spare batteries.

this weekend is starting out not so enjoyably.

Let's step back a week or two and start PLANNING a camping trip.

First decide where it is you want to go camping. If it's the same spot as always then decision made but if it is somewhere new you should check out the Internet to get as much information as you can about the camp ground you plan to visit. What facilities are available and what rules and regulations are in place.

The next thing to do is make a check list of what you need to take and what you want to take. Make this a group discussion involving all that are going on the trip.

The weekend before the trip go to your storage area (Garage, Basement) and pull out all your camping gear. Put up the tent. Does it need any new poles or pegs? Do all the zippers work? Does it need a ground sheet? Do the air mattresses hold air? Do you have all the cooking equipment including gas cylinders, charcoal etc? Do you have Flashlights, Batteries, Sleeping Bags, Cooler? Check the long range weather forecast. Do you need boots, rain gear or warmer clothing ( especially if you are heading to the mountains). Maybe you need a GPS device or two way radios. They need batteries too.

If you are going with a group of friends make sure they have the check list too. Some things everyone needs others can be brought by just one of the group. No need having ten air mattress pumps and nobody brought the any toilet paper. There is roughing it and then there is roughing it! You can bet that nobody forgets the beer and snack food!

Check your list and go out and buy what needs to be replaced or order it online.

Basically, what it boils down to is, if you Plan a camping trip rather than just go on a camping trip you will have much more fun. What does it really matter if it rains if you have all the equipment you need at your fingertips. Choosing Family Camping Tents

Many adults will say one of the most memorable parts of their childhood was the family’s camping trips. Camping is near and dear to a lot of peoples’ hearts whether the sleep out took place in the backyard or involved a more in depth planning and execution process. It makes sense that as those children grew up and had families of their own that they would want to continue the family tradition and take their children on camping trips as well. To make this dream a reality, the most important piece of equipment is the family camping tents. These tents have evolved over the years into virtual paradises of home like comfort.

You can find family camping tents in a variety of styles, sizes, and colors. Almost any version can be found to accommodate the family’s size and needs. Family camping tents are better made than ever with the advancement of technology, and are constructed of the most durable and weatherproof materials. While it may not be the optimal experience to camp in inclement weather, with these tents it doesn’t have to be the worst thing ever either. While deciding on the perfect tent for your family there is a certain criteria to keep in mind.

Before style even becomes a consideration, it is important to find a well made family camping tent. When you find a tent that you really like, check online message boards for honest reactions to the products performance. There are several websites available that are designed to provide consumer opinions. Then visit the local sporting goods store to take a look at the tent up close and personal. You will want to pay careful attention to the zippers, fastenings, and how easy or difficult the tent is to put up. Be sure to also look into the type of material used and the quality of the poles and attachments. A good family camping tent should be made to last a long time and hold up to the rigors of the great outdoors.

Once you have found several family camping tents you like, then you can narrow down your selection according to your personal preferences. Some family camping tents are a large one room design, while others have a tunnel between two “rooms” that children find a lot of fun. Also consider the size and space available in the vehicle that will be used for camping trips. Many models are made to be compact and space saving for smaller vans and cars.

Family camping trips are worthwhile. Be sure to be properly prepared with one of the high quality family camping tents available for a more enjoyable vacation.

Build A Basic 3 Day Survival Kit

Your first concern for creating a survival kit is what types of events you are planning for. You will most likely customize your kit to accommodate your distinct needs and goals. I will be covering only the essential aspects of what you need for most circumstances. this won't cover every circumstance, and you can't take into account every possible scenario. However, if you have an emergency kit or basic survival kit set up you will already be much better prepped than most people when catastrophe takes place.

Storage

You need some kind of bag to hold all your survival items in, otherwise you don't have a survival kit, you have a heap of stuff. Having a stack of stuff wont work if you have to vacate hastily in an emergency situation. Having everything in a GOOD (Get Out Of Dodge) Bag is a far better idea when you need to get away in short order. Do you need the top of the line survivalist backpack or will that smelly old duffel bag work for your survival kit storage? Having a real backpack will provide many benefits like ease of hauling if you find yourself traveling by foot but waiting to put your gear together until you acquire the right backpack is not a smart idea. Getting all of your items together in some type of bag that can be grabbed and toted around quickly is more important. However, 5 plastic shopping bags or that big suitcase you got from your mother probably aren't going to meet the portability criteria. You should have a respectable size bag that can fit plenty of survival equipment for 3 days at least. A large duffel bag can do the trick until you determine which backpack system fits your needs and budget the best.

Water

Clean refreshing water, its not just for the health buff in you. It also doubles as a lifesaver when you don't have easy access to liquids for that ever important activity we call life. Most survival guidelines say that you should have 1 gallon per person per day. If your survival kit is going to be mobile then you should probably go with the bare minimum of 1 liter per person per day. The gallon jugs would take up too much space, leaving too little room for other essential items, and would add an extra 25 pounds to what you would have to lug around. Since your survival kit is going to supply you with a minimum of 3 days, you will want to take three 1 liter bottles of water. Next, you should pack a few items that will help with water collection and purification. A collapsible water bucket, can help you collect water from a stream or collect rain running off of your shelter, and it takes up almost no space in your survival kit. Purification can be as basic as boiling the water on the fire you created and using iodine tablets, or can get more comprehensive using filters. You should boil water for 5 minutes minimum but 20 minutes is a better time to shoot for. There are ways to boil water without a pot or kettle but I suggest you buy a small camping pot with a lid to put in your survival kit. This will become useful for more than just boiling water. When storing the pot or kettle in your kit, use the space inside the pot to store spices or other small items.

Food

There are many types of backpack meals and high calorie energy bars you can store in your survival kit. Any food you pack should have a long shelf life so that you don't have to rotate your survival kit food stock every other week. Backpack meals are usually freeze-dried and only require boiling water to enjoy. MRE's or "Meals Ready To Eat" are an all in one meal contained in individual packages. This will come down to preference. Don't forget some utensils. You can splurge on a camping spork for 7 dollars, or your local dollar store should have utensils that will do the trick. You might consider covering each utensil in something to prevent them from banging together. This will help ensure you don't wake up Sasquatch if you find yourself walking past his den.

Clothing

You should pack enough clothes to get you through a few accidents like falling in to a river or sliding down a muddy embankment. You may not be a klutz but stuff happens. You might find yourself walking a whole lot more than you want to, so your survival kit should have a comfy but durable pair of boots. A few pairs of wool socks and long underwear will go a long way in keeping you warm. You should also take a pair of comfortable pants. Your skinny jeans are not comfortable regardless of how hot you think you look in them and zubaz went out of style years ago. You don't need to be decked out in full "deer hunter" gear but something comfortable and somewhat durable is a must. You should pack a couple of long sleeve shirts. Remember a long sleeve shirt can double as a short sleeve shirt simply by rolling up the sleeves. Short sleeve shirts on the other hand cannot double up as long sleeve shirts. You should also pack a light rain resistant jacket which can help keep the wetness out if needed. Lastly, don't forget a hat. No survival kit is complete without a hat. You could go with the Crocodile Dundee look, a wool hat or even a baseball hat will help protect you from the sun and keep some of your precious heat from escaping that head of yours.

Shelter

You should have some sort of shelter materials in your emergency kit. The 5 person tent with the extra room probably isn't realistic. You can go with a small 1 person tent, or a tarp and some sturdy cord or parachute cord. If your survival bag still has a good deal of room you can add a bedroll or "space blanket". If you choose a tarp, make sure the tarp is nylon or polyester and has reinforced grommet holes to make it simpler to construct a shelter with.

First Aid Kit

You can buy many different types of first aid kits. You probably don't need the deluxe home surgeon first aid kit. A basic first aid kit should work fine. Of course you can make your own if you have a good grasp on first aid. If you don't have first aid knowledge then I recommend you pack a manual on basic first aid in your survival kit along with the actual first aid kit. Having all the tools without knowing how to use them would be bad. Remember, a mind is a terrible thing to waste. Look for something small like an army first aid field manual. The Time-Life First Aid series might look nice on your bookshelf but is too awkward for your emergency kit bag.

Everything Else

This next section isn't a comprehensive be-all and end-all list. It is simply listed as a starting point. You should customize your survival kit to fit circumstances that you will most likely find yourself in, based on your geography. You can't forget your Survival Knife. You will need waterproof matches, a few lighters and a flint rod. You should have a few flashlights. These can be battery-powered or hand crank models but if they take batteries, don't forget to have extra batteries. A small sewing kit with a heavy-duty sewing needle can be quite helpful. A few flares to use for signaling. A few candles for warmth or light should be included. You should definitely pack a small survival fishing kit. You don't need to win a bass pro title, you just need to be able to catch food if possible. A compass can be handy but make sure you know how to use one before you actually have the need to. A few plastic garbage bags can serve many purposes. Some sort of multi-tool should be readily available as well and of course a survival manual of some sort. You should also consider having a small sum of cash in your survival bag.

These things don't make up the ultimate survival kit for anyone or any specific survival situation. You will need to decide what situations you are preparing for and change the contents accordingly. However if you put together a basic Survival Kit like we have listed, you will be much better prepared than most people when disaster strikes and being mostly prepared is better than not being prepared at all now isn't it?

Elliptical Workouts

Elliptical workouts basically involve aerobic or cardiovascular exercise. Elliptical cross trainers can be intimidating at first glance but once you get familiar with them you will find them easy to use and a fun part of your routine.

To begin your elliptical workout, stand with your feet firmly planted in the movable footpads. The advantage of your feet being stationary makes this a smooth and non-jarring motion that is unique to the elliptical cross trainers. Grab the handles to add the upper body movement for a total body workout.

Elliptical motion feels very natural and compliments normal body movements only making it feel like the workout is easier. Elliptical workouts are equal or greater than similar equipment such as the treadmill creating a safer workout. It reduces the harmful stress and impact on your muscles and joints.

With time a major concern in our daily lives, an elliptical workout can be very desirable. It provides a total body workout utilizing one machine therefore saving time in having to go from machine to machine to achieve the same effect for all the different areas of the body.

An elliptical trainer benefit is they are safe for beginners and will even challenge the pro athletes. And because most people like to use these machines, they are more likely to workout on a regular basis. Consistent elliptical workouts will help in attaining good overall cardiovascular health.

It generally takes twenty minutes of elliptical exercise to start burning calories and improve your cardio health. If you are just starting out, exercise for twenty minutes and work up from there as your fitness level improves. Try to set 3 days a week as your goal to workout and work up to 5 days when you become more fit.

Another elliptical trainer benefit is they are perfect for burning fat. To burn fat effectively, you need to exercise at a moderate pace for a long period of time. Elliptical cross trainers give you the slow, aerobic, long duration type of exercise that works best to burn fat.

If you are looking for a good overall workout in the shortest amount of time, the elliptical workout is an ideal choice.

Conversion Van Camping Advice

Conversion van camping doesn't give you the luxury of life in an RV, nor the discomfort of sleeping in a tent. It can be tough to safely heat a van at night, but it's cheap compared to an RV, and you can go places they cannot. We spent more than 25 nights sleeping in our conversion van last year.

Life In A Conversion Van

Make your van into something that's useable for you, especially if it's going to be your residence for days or weeks at a time. For my wife and I, this meant having space to move around. We took out the two middle seats which, I convinced Ana, would be good armchairs for the living room. Then we had enough space for dressing or cooking. The bench-seat in back folds out into a comfortable bed, so we were all set for camping.

When traveling, you need a system of organization to keep your space inside the van livable. After our first long trip, we noticed the many things we never used. We got more efficient after that. We're also able to keep the space open, despite carrying many things, by using plastic storage tubs you can buy almost anywhere. They stack well, and if you need more room at night, you can put them on the roof. They're rainproof with the lids snapped on.

Heating A Conversion Van

Camping in a van can be cold at times, as it was for us in the deserts of Arizona last winter. We started the van and cranked up the heater once in a while, but only for brief periods. The danger of carbon monoxide poisoning is just too great to leave the car running while you are sleeping.

We also cooked to heat up the van. Our propane camp stove burned very clean. Any time it was cold, it was time to cook dinner, breakfast, or tea. This heated up the van nicely. Again, because of carbon monoxide, I wouldn't recommend ever sleeping with a propane burner going. Still, sometimes a quick warm-up is all you need before you crawl under the blankets for the night.

The secret to heating a conversion van when camping is to give up. Enjoy meal time warm-ups, but unless you have electric power, I don't know of a safe way to heat a van all night. Instead, you can heat yourselves. Wear warm clothing. Bring more blankets than you think you'll need. Prepare a thermos bottle full of hot coffee each night, so it will be waitng for you in the morning. You get to warm the van when you make it, and warm up yourselves drinking it for breakfast.

Advantages Of Conversion Van Camping

Traveling and camping in a conversion van costs less than in an RV. The initial cost is a lot less if you buy used, as we did, and the cost of driving it is substantialy less. We averaged 18 miles per gallon on our last cross-country trip. Most recreational vehicles are lucky to get half of that, and they're very expensive to maintain.

Compared with tent camping, a van is much more comfortable. Even if you backpack, you are probably going to drive some kind of car to wherever you go. With a van, you can come inside if it starts to rain. If you're backpacking a long way from home, you can save on motels on the drive to and from the trailhead.

Camping can be more comfortable in an RV, but not in all ways. It's nice, for example, to park anywhere. We've taken naps in parking lots, and nobody was the wiser, thanks to tinted windows, curtains, and the inconspicuousness of a van. At a free campground in Florida we got the best spot, on a bank overlooking Lake Talquin, because our van was small enough to fit there, unlike most of the RVs.

It's great to be able to drive anywhere. In the conversion van, camping wherever we are when it gets dark is no problem. Finally, some larger RVs drag a car around because the big rig just isn't practical for daily driving. Our coversion van is a second home AND our primary vehicle for shopping or going to work. That's flexibilty.

Making the Best DVD Slideshow

Below I have given some pointers to keep it interesting:

When you think of DVD slideshows you often think Wedding, Birthday or Anniversary, I have covered all three below:

• Weddings

Every bride and groom is unique and has a different story to tell. Use that uniqueness to select photos both personalized and interesting to watch. If the bride and groom are complete opposites, then use pictures, backgrounds, to show how they compliment each other.

• Birthdays

This of course depends on whether your loved one is a child or a grown adult.

For a child, this is the great opportunity to show them growing up, how they got their nickname, what are their favorite past times (sports, pets, camping, etc.). You can also select music and backgrounds that relate to their character.

For an adult, a great idea would be to incorporate notes of well wishes from past birthdays. You can also show major accomplishments from years gone by through photos, awards, music and memorabilia.

• Anniversaries

One of the best things you can do for an anniversary slideshow is to gather memorabilia that the couple has most likely forgotten about. Talk to friends, neighbors and relatives that would be willing to share photographs and other memories. Putting this into a DVD slideshow is sure to be a hit with the couple. Again, be sure to incorporate music from the couple favorite genre.

Other popular DVD Slideshow ideas

Newborn babies, childhood and family events are all great sources of slideshow subjects. Here are some suggestions to keep these productions interesting and eye catching:

• Newborn Babies

All babies are precious, but most slideshows about them are boring. To keep it interesting remember to include photos of more than just the baby; don’t forget about mom, dad, grandma, brothers, etc. etc. Another great idea is to incorporate fun facts about the date of birth (i.e. what happen on the same day 10, 50 or 100 years ago); this can be done by using carefully placed title slides within your DVD Slideshow.

• Kids

For younger children, you can help them put together a slideshow of their favorite things, using their own thoughts and ideas. Let them record a few sound bites to be included within the show.

• Family & Friends

Family vacations, camping trips, family reunions and school plays are all great contenders for slideshows. Don’t forget to include dated title slides so you’re not trying to guess ten years down the road.

So, whether you are creating a slideshow on your own or hiring a professional, keeping it creative is just a matter of detail. Have fun with this, the reward is like none other.

Environmental Care During A Camping Trip

When you go camping, it’s not only your family and the persons you’re with, you are responsible of. When you go camping, it’s not only your personal items you should take care of. When you go camping, it’s not only your tent or your RV or your sleeping cot that you have to look after.

What most people don’t realize is that when they go camping, they are also responsible in taking care of the environment and making sure they do not do anything that is harmful to nature.

One thing you should remember when going camping is to dispose of your trash properly. Never leave any trash behind or worse throw them in lakes or streams. Instead you should always have trash bags ready and take them with you when you leave the campsite. It’s even better if you segregate your garbage and placing biodegradable and non biodegradable trash in different containers. Be sure to dispose of these trash bags properly.

Second, respect the creatures and the wildlife that live in the forest or park you’re camping in. It’s their home and you shouldn’t do anything that may disturb or harm them. Hunting is an activity largely criticized by environmentalists. Those who take pleasure from hurting animals and seeing them cry in pain do not have respect for Mother Nature. There are nature friendly activities you can engage in when you want to marvel at these creatures like bird watching.

Third, don’t follow tips that are harmful to nature like the hairspray tip which encourages you to use a hairspray to get rid off insects. Hairspray contains substances which are contributory to the depletion of the ozone layer and to global warming. If you want to protect yourself from ticks and mosquitoes, just apply insect repellent lotion on your skin. When using soap, choose those that are biodegradable. Also opt for paper bags instead of plastic bags. But if you can’t avoid using plastic bags, make sure that you recycle them.

Fourth, never leave a mark behind. Leave the campsite the way it is. Nix any ideas of your son to carve out his initials on the trees. Discourage your friend from vandalizing on the large rock and writing, “Joe was here”.

Also, never leave a campfire attended because this is dangerous and may start a fire in the campsite.

Fifth, it is a very good idea to use environmental friendly camping equipment. For many years, many human practices and equipment have caused for the deterioration of the environment. That’s why when you go camping it is imperative that you choose camping gears like Coleman heaters that are safe for the environment. The Coleman BlackCat Catalytic heater for instance operates on clean-burning propane that is earth friendly.

Always be concerned with the environment in whatever activity you’re doing, whether it’s camping or any other activity. Remember, there’s no place like home and we should do everything to take care of our Mother Earth.

Visit Hamilton Island Australia

Now could be the perfect time to visit the Whitsunday Islands and Hamilton Island Australia in particular. The recent cyclone, Ului, that hit the northern coastline of Queensland around the Whitsundays has caused some bad publicity for the islands. It hit at the end of March (2010) causing a few of the Whitsunday Islands to be evacuated. this has in fact put some tourists off visiting the islands, thinking that there might be some devastation.

In fact Cyclone Ului unleashed most of its fury before hitting the coast so most of the islands were unscathed. This weekend also saw the end of day light saving hours, the official mark of the end of the summer and the approach of winter. It is at this time of the year that Hamilton Island Australia and the other Whitsunday Islands are at their very best - less rain and lovely warm temperatures.

Hamilton Island Australia is the largest of the inhabited Islands and is loved by couples, families and even the youngsters. Unlike most of the other islands, it offers more than just one resort complex and has an array of things to keep even the fussiest person entertained. It is perhaps for this reason that Hamilton Island remains one of the most popular of the Whitsunday Islands Australia.

5 Reasons to go to Hamilton Island Now

1) The Weather - May to October is a fabulous time of year to visit the Whitsundays - the weather is at its best - not too hot and less rain than the summer months.

2) There are a few bargains to be had due to the recent cyclone. Hamilton and the other islands need to let everyone know that all is well on the islands. Try Flight Centre for flight and accommodation packages or search on line. (Expedia)

3) The Choice of Accommodation - There is plenty to choose from on Hamilton Island Australia. The action tends to be around either the Marina or the Beach so I'd try to pick accommodation around either of these two areas. Try privately owned villas, usually managed through an agent, for a more affordable option or some of the larger hotels who may have rooms at excellent prices

4) The wide range of activities - Of course you can dive and snorkel and go out to the Great Barrier Reef from here but there are also plenty of things on the island to keep you entertained. There is a Koala park, a gym, bush walking, lots of swimming pools to which you have access, enjoy cocktails at the lookout point at sunset - simply stunning

5) Get away from everything - This really is an idyllic tropical island where you will feel away from it all. If you just want to relax and enjoy the sunshine, then this is also the place the for you

Hamilton Island Australia is a little piece of luxury. With direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, it's also one of the easiest tropical island getaways from Australia. What are you waiting for?

10 Steps To Get Your Ex Girlfriend Back When She Has Moved On

Every girl wants a guy who can understand and connect with her but there are rules for pursuing a girl after a break up and I’ll explain what they are in this article and how they can open the door for getting back together.

If you want to get your ex girlfriend back when she has moved on, the following 10 techniques will get her attention again.

1.) Do not be afraid to call her.

As soon as you call her try to keep control of the conversation by sounding vague and mysterious. Let her know that you’ve been thinking about her but that you’re also busy living your life. If she thinks that you’re over her she’ll be a little more willing to contact you and keep the lines of communication open.

Also when you talk to her, don’t do it five times a day. Keep it to once or twice a week maximum. If you call her too much too often she’ll think you’re desperate and needy and that’s not a quality that a woman wants. Instead, keep your phone calls short and sweet. The less you say about yourself and what you’ve been doing the better.

2.) Contact her via email.

It’s OK to send her an email, especially if the breakup wasn’t amicable. It could be that you don’t want to hear her voice right now and that’s OK, I understand, and so the next best thing is to send an email.

The advantage to doing this over a text message or a Facebook wall post is that an email gives you the writing space you need to pour your heart out if you need to. So take advantage of technology and send her a quick note letter her know what you’ve been up to.

3.) It’s totally fine to date other women

After the breakup because chances are she’ll be doing the same thing as well. But I want to caution you here, don’t take dating other too seriously at this point.

Dating others and getting out and having a good time will do you good after the breakup by keeping your mind off her and raising your spirits if you’re depressed. So get out there and get a life and keep an open mind.

4.) Remember her birthday.

Holidays are a great excuse to get in touch with your ex and you can’t do better than a birthday because you can personalize the gift.

Everyone likes to be remembered on their birthday. So take the time and treat your ex a princess.

5.) Analyze her.

Do you really know what she wants or is looking for in a man? She wants a man who wants her for who she is, so pay attention to what she says and does when she talks.

If you didn’t pay attention to her before when you were dating, do it now. You need to understand your ex now more than ever before.

6.) Avoid Jealousy.

One of the things that turns women off the most is jealous boyfriends or ex boyfriends. You’ve broken up and so you don’t have any claim to her, what she does or who she sees.

So if you find that you’re getting jealous of your ex, do something to take your mind off her. Go out with friends and get a life. Do things that make you happy so you’re not obsessing over what she’s doing right now.

Remember she is your ex. And getting back together with her means that you need to avoid this and accept the breakup for what it is.

7.) Be Nice.

How does she talk about you when she’s with other people? Does your ex girlfriend talk nicely about you when she’s discussing your relationship with others?

Did you give her any reason not to?

I know neither of you were perfect in the relationship, but this is a great indication as to how she really feels about you as a person. Try and find out what she’s saying about you and take it as constructive criticism. Imagine how much better you’ll be if you can take some of your weaknesses and turn them into strengths.

8.) Don’t play mind games.

It’s really easy to play mind games with someone you’ve broken up with. But this won’t do you any good when it comes to getting her back. Do you think it’s going to help you get her back if you play mind games with her?

My advice to you is to stay away from playing any and all mind games during your breakup. If she’s playing them with you, ignore them and focus on what’s really important – her.

9.) Try not to give up control during the breakup.

Is your ex girlfriend chasing you after the breakup? If so, don’t reveal your cards and don’t overplay your hand. Even though you can have her back whenever you want because she’s after you it’s important to try and maintain control over the space you have so you can dictate what happens next.

Relationships are difficult and complex at the best of times. And when you’re together, you want to keep the communication open between you two, but when you’re apart you need to try and appear mysterious and more complex.

During your reconciliation with your ex girlfriend, don’t ever tell her you love her unless you’re absolutely certain she loves you back, because if you tell her but she doesn’t feel the same way about you yet, then you’ve played your best card and that’s something you can’t get back
.
10.) Become physically and intellectually attractive to her.

Even though it’s not the most important thing on your ex girlfriend’s checklist, you should try to stay in shape or get back in shape if needed so that you look like you’re trying.

Also you should look at diversifying your interests to become more intellectually appealing to her as well. Not only do women want someone who takes care of themselves physically but they also want someone who’s got some brains.

Did You Know?
That if you really want a second chance with your ex girlfriend there's one thing you can give her hat will help bring down the walls that she’s built up and get the two of you communicating again and that's VALIDATION.

The sooner you learn this skill the sooner you'll have a second shot with her even if she’s seeing another guy.

RV Boondocking Tips

What is RV boondocking? It is simply camping in your recreatinal vehicle in an area with limited or no facilities. In many areas of the west, you can just drive into the desert, and stay free for up to two weeks. this is the case on most BLM (Bureau Of Land Management) and national forest lands. How far you have to move to stay another two weeks is open to interpretation, but is probably isn't far.

Long Term RV Boondocking on BLM Land

With the growing popularity of boondocking, the BLM has begun to establish areas for longer stays, particularly in Arizona. The permit fee is around $140 now, but this allows you to stay up to six months, and you'll have pump stations, dumpsters and water available. That's cheaper than paying property taxes or rent for a lot to park on.

Boondocking Communities

Ask around when you are in the desert southwest, and you'll find there are whole RV communities that form every winter. There are temporary towns like "Slab City" in California, complete with bookstores, grocery vendors, and other businesses run by RVers. When summer returns, these boondock communities disappear, and reappear again the following winter.

Perhaps the largest gathering of RV boondockers is in Quartzite, Arizona. Up to several hundred thousand people spend at least part of the year boondocking here. Quartzite is near the California border, on Interstate 10, only 20 miles from the Colorado River. It's surrounded by BLM lands, and it's famous for gem shows and swap meets, and the multiplying of its population each winter.

Other RV Boondocking Opportunities

Look, and you'll find "hidden" places where you can park your RV for a week or a month in the desert southwest. Some are free, and others just inexpensive. For example, the Hot Well Dunes Recreation Area, north of Bowie, Arizona, costs $3 per night, but has nice hotsprings and plenty of wildlife. You can get an annual permit for $30, but you're limited to two weeks per month (permits are sold at the BLM office in Safford). Outside of the fenced area you can stay free, but then you don't get the hotsprings and shaded picnic tables.

There are many other areas like the Hot Well Dunes for cheap or free RV boondocking. The Bureau of Land Management can tell you what's available under their jurisdiction. The Woodall's campground guide lists campgrounds that are free. Also, just keep your eyes open for other RVs parked out in the desert or forest, and ask around.
